Celebrity Jersey Cards #393 Brian Griese & Tim Howard

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebrities wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our alphabetical journey through all Major League Baseball teams.

Second-generation NFL quarterback Brian Griese was born in Miami, FL and went to the University of Michigan. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos and played the first five years of his career in Denver. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (twice), the Miami Dolphins (like his father Bob) and the Chicago Bears. Brian and his father wrote Undefeated, about football, dealing with Judi's (Brian's mother) cancer battle and other stories. Brian wore his familiar #14 when he threw out a pitch in Denver and earned his Celebrity Jersey Card.
Tim Howard was born in New Jersey, but has played soccer all over the world. Currently, the goalie captains the MLS club Colorado Rapids and plays for the United States national team. He wrote The Keeper, a book about his career and his battles with Tourette syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder. Howard traded his Rapids jersey for a Rockies one for his Celebrity Jersey Card, although he still repped the Mile High city.

Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch and Monica Abbott

Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch and Monica Abbott. In the world of women's softball, it doesn't get any better than those three women pitchers. They would be my Mt. Rushmore of softball pitchers and I don't even need a fourth to complete the monument.
Combined, they went 298-74 in college and 304-74 in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch), with 2 gold medals and 3 silver medals in Olympic play. All were/are dominant, feared pitchers and all will be Hall of Famers.
I had the pleasure of covering Monica for 4 seasons in the NPF and Cat for 2 seasons. Jennie retired before I started covering the NPF, but I have gotten to know her a bit from her return visits and clinics with the Chicago Bandits. I have also had the honor of interviewing all three.
Over the last couple seasons, I have started building a small, but meaningful NPF memorabilia collection. Cat recently sent a signed ball. I now have signed balls from the
Big 3."
Any softball collector would want these three, but these balls mean more to me than the stats would dictate. Cat, Jennie and Monica are all class acts. I have been around them enough in public and behind-the-scenes and I have seen three athletes who were fierce competitors, but also great ambassadors for the game.
Several years ago, as a visiting player, Cat gave her time to me, a reporter from an unknown website. Jennie has done the same while juggling clinics and a long line of fans at the Bandits ballpark. Monica took time away from her birthday celebration to give me an interview. Monica also joined the autograph line after she returned to Chicago and no-hit the Bandits.
These three softballs sit proudly on my shelf. They represent three of the all-time greatest. They also represent (perhaps more importantly) great memories I have from my years covering the NPF.
Thank you Cat, Jennie and Monica! #CatchOn

Dana DeLorenzo at Flashback Weekend 2018

Dana DeLorenzo is probably best known for her role on Ash vs. Evil Dead, but she has been performing for most of her life. I have been a fan of hers for years and probably even longer than I realize, but I didn't know it was her way back when.
As a child, she did radio commercials for her father's store. She also was a castmate in Tony n' Tina's Wedding in Chicago, her home town. For several years, she was "Marissa Sanchez" on Mancow's Morning Madhouse. She also graduated from DePaul University.
I had met Dana a couple times prior to Flashback Weekend 2018, but I was surprised when she remembered me by name and asked me to come back to chat when it was a little less busy. Thinking it was polite chat, I didn't think much of it, but she waved me over later on and of course, I loved the chance to talk to her a bit more.
Dana is sweet, interesting and even a bit kooky, in a good way. Not many women could pull off that hat look, but it worked great for Dana. She joked that it just covered a bad hair day.
She wanted to take a funny picture and asked me about previous pictures we took. That is truly going above and beyond for a fan (or reporter). I suggested choking me with my press lanyard and she almost literally jumped at the chance. It wasn't good enough for her to merely choke me, she wanted to "hang" me and jumped on the chair to really sell it.
Look at her face. I think she actually enjoyed this! Some celebrities will do offbeat pictures, but few will do them with as much gusto as Dana, but that's just her!
I think Dana is just doing what comes natural, but it is also good for business. I know I will stop and see her every time at future conventions, no matter how many times I have seen her. I know this picture attracted other fans, too.
You can follow Dana DeLorenzo on twitter for info and fun tweets from her. You can also check FlashbackWeekend.com for info on future events.

Reality and Ravinia

The newest episode of The "Or Else" podcast is now on SoundCloud. In Episode 27: Reality and Ravinia, Tommy Else and I discuss the early stages of the RPro reality show and being on stage at Ravinia with Billy Corgan and our RPo friends.
Filming had begun on the reality show which was to be aired on AMC. Things were very hectic for Billy Corgan, the Baron brothers and the RPro wrestlers. I was on the fringe of the chaos.
One of the coolest and most surreal moments came when Billy invited a bunch of the RPro roster, including me, to join him at Ravinia. Even though I was involved in RPro, I would never imagine I would be on stage with Billy and the group.
The day started with entrance to a private parking area literally a few hundred feet from backstage. The RPro gang met on the Ravinia grounds and we were led to a room where Billy was giving an exclusive pre-show performance to some VIP guests. At the end, he gathered us around and informed us we would be joining him on stage for a song. He guided us through "Of a Broken Heart" for a little practice.
After that, we all enjoyed an afternoon soaking in the Ravinia atmosphere before the actual show began. As the show started, we took our seats and waited for the cue to join him on stage.
Towards the end of the show, we got called to go backstage to the green room, where we waited for the introduction from Billy. As Billy called us on stage, the bunch of us split up and entered from both sides. I was far stage left.
I admit, I never knew "Of a Broken Heart" before that night, but fortunately, Billy didn't count on me singing lead. I was able to sing (quietly) along with the chorus.
It was so odd looking into the crowd of thousands. What was I doing up there and how did I get there?
The song ended and we went backstage again and enjoyed some food in the green room. None of us could believe what happened. It was unreal.
Tommy and I go into more detail on this night on Episode 27: Reality and Ravinia. You can also listen to earlier episodes of The "Or Else" podcast on The "Or Else" main page on SoundCloud. While you are there, you should check out "Jesse Unplugged" and "Losing Friends," Tommy's other podcasts. They are vastly different, but equally entertaining.

Billy Joel at Wrigley Field 2018

Despite being a big Billy Joel fan, my first Billy concert happened almost by accident. In the pre-internet days, info wasn't readily available everywhere. I learned about his tour for "The Bridge" as I walked by Rose Records downtown Chicago. Tickets just went on sale and I decided to go in and get a pair. I think they were about $20.
Fast forward to early this year, when another Wrigley Field concert was announced. The September date worried me a bit because of the potential weather issues, but that wouldn't stop me from attending. Billy would be 69 at concert time and you never know when he will stop touring.
My sister Jean and brother-in-law Scott agreed to join me. Although not huge fans, they enjoy concerts and I was glad to go with them, especially since I would be intruding on their 33rd anniversary.
My early weather concerns were realized, as rain was predicted for the day. We endured some rain early on through mid-afternoon. We ate lunch and did a little bar-hopping, hoping for the storm to pass, which it did by late afternoon.
Billy opened with "Big Shot" and closed with "You May Be Right," as the 4th encore song. All told, Billy and the band romped through 26 songs, with Billy getting a short rerst as two band members took the lead twice.
Crystal Taliefero took the lead on "Respect," as an homage to the recently deceased Aretha Franklin. A long-time favorite of mine, Crystal took center stage and rocked the house.
Later in the show, Mike DelGuidice showed his operatic abilities with a powerful rendition of "Nessun dorma." DelGuidice, who fronts Big Shot, a Billy cover band, has an amazing vocal range.
Billy isn't the dame raw performer that I first saw back in 1986, but he is just as enjoyable. His edgy energy has been replaced with polished showmanship. He has transitioned nicely in his older years.
This was my 12th Billy show and I will keep going as long as he keeps returning. I especially enjoyed seeing it with Jean and Scott. Sharing these experiences makes for great memories. I really appreciate them letting me join their anniversary weekend.
I wrote more about the night for Global Traveler at The Piano Man Plays Wrigley Field. It was the most read piece on GT's site, mostly thanks to DelGuidice sharing it on social media, for hich I am grateful.

Trevor Mueller and Albert the Alien

Trevor Mueller is an award-winning creator, artist and writer of several webcomic series. Based out of Chicago, Mueller is very popular, successful and busy.
One of Trevor's creations is the Albert the Alien series. Trevor describes it as, "Albert the Alien is just a normal everyday kid…from another planet! He’s come to Earth to learn about humans as the first intergalactic foreign exchange student. And when Albert’s involved, even the ordinary becomes extraordinary." It is a highly entertaining webcomic, which debuted in April 2013.
Unfortunately, the Albert the Alien series is coming to an end, but it really isn't a sad occasion. Trevor promises to bring it home with a bang!
Albert the Alien Vol 4: Space Bullies from Mars will be the final volume of the very popular Albert the Alien series. Knowing Trevor and following Albert for years, I am sure he will make this final volume bigger, better and more entertaining
More cool news is you don't have to just take my word for it. You can get a free 25 page preview on the Kickstarter page for Albert the Alien Volume 4. While you are there, you should also help the cause by donating a bit. Trevor has a big list of rewards for various pledge levels. You can get pins, tshirts, prints and other exclusive stuff, while you are helping to make Albert the Alien Volume 4 a reality. The Kickstarter campaign runs for 30 days with a goal of $5,000. I have no doubt the goal will be met, but I encourage everyone to help out and to earn fun rewards while we wait for the final volume of Albert the Alien.
Check out TrevorMueller.com for info, updates and more. Also, follow Trevor on twitter and follow Trevor on Facebook.

Friendly Encounters: Josh Blue and Jean Parker

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Josh Blue started doing comedy during his college days. He was the winner on the 2006 season of NBC's Last Comic Standing and was the first comedian to do stand-up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Blue has cerebral palsy, specifically classified as spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy. His condition has not stopped him from a successful career in comedy and it is sometimes used as comedic material for him.
My sister Jean saw him earlier this year and sent me the picture. That's Jean, always looking out for me and contributing. It's reason #834 of why I love and appreciate her.
I checked out some of Blue's work on YouTube. One appearance on Last Comic Standing, an appearance on The Tonight Show and another appearance on Last Comic Standing are just a few of the videos I found and enjoyed. You can also go to JoshBlue.com for more info and other fun.
Blue is an inspiration to all. He is not letting his condition prevent him from living his dream as a comedian. Going up on stage and doing stand-up has to be hard enough, without the added hindrances his condition brings him. I have not called him a "disabled comedian," because, first and foremost, he really is just a comedian, who happens to have a life-altering medical condition.

Celebrity Jersey Cards #392 Bobby Heenan & Nattie Neidhart

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our alphabetical romp through Major League Baseball.

Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was born in Chicago, IL and went on to have a Hall of Fame career in wrestling. Heenan had one of the quickest wits anywhere. I firmly believe in today's age, he would have had much more mainstream popularity and exposure. As talented as he was, he was just as nice. I had many dealings with Heenan and he was simply one of the greatest people I have ever met. Heenan's Celebrity Jersey Card comes from a wrestling appearance in Florida, which I happened to attend. The smiling wrestler with him is a young CM Punk.
Born into the legendary Hart wrestling family in Calgary, Nattie Neidhart has gone onto a distinguished career. A two-time champ in the WWE, many feel Neidhart hasn't won more titles because she is just too good at making others look good in the ring. Either way, the third-generation star will end up in the WWE Hall of Fame when she retires. On her Celebrity Jersey Card, Neidhart is wearing her title belt, while holding the Red Sox World Series trophy. I believe the double trophies is a CJC first.

Jordynne Grace's "DM's of a Female Indy Wrestler"

Jordynne Grace made her wrestling debut at the age of 15 and has been building her wrestling career since. Still only 22, Jordynne has more than 7 years of in-ring experience.
I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Jordynne a few years ago at Resistance Pro. Check out our interview at On the Beat With Jordynne Grace at Resistance Pro. It was a Halloween theme show, which explains my Rowdy Johngy Piper outfit in the picture below.
Jordynne has created an interesting concept for a book. In DM's of a Female Indy Wrestler, Jordynne compiled 28 pages of DM's she has received via Facebook, twitter and Instagram over the years. She promises they are "funny, gross and absurd."
The book was so popular, she published DM's of a Female Indy Wrestler: Volume 2. This edition has 30 pages and a quote from Joey Ryan.
In addition to the entertainment from reading the DM's, buying the book benefits RAINN  (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. Jordynne is giving 10% of all profits to RAINN.
Go to JordynneGraceWrestler.com to check out all of her merchandise, including her books, pictures and tshirts, and to get other info on Jordynne. You can also follow Jordynne on Facebook and follow Jordynne on twitter.

Emily Allard Loves Johngy's Beat

Emily Allard will always have a special place in my heart. She was one of the first Chicago Bandits I ever met and interviewed. Her love of the game and the fans is unreal. She always has time for every fan and was always giving of her time to me for interviews.
I caught up with Emily at one of her Be The Momentum training clinics at the Dugout. I wrote about that on the Patch at Emily Allard and Be The Momentum. It was great seeing her again.
After the interview, Emily gave me a promo for Johngy's Beat. Thank you Emily for everything. You are truly a special person and I am a fan and friend for life.

Pete Rose at The National 2017

one of the first baseball players I ever remember is Pete Rose.  When I was growing up, he was one of the best players.  "Charlie Hustle" was about a third of the way through his career, but definitely on a path to the Hall of Fame.
A Rookie of the Year, 17x All-Star, 3x NL batting champ, 2x Gold Glove, an NL MVP and a World Series MVP, Rose racked up the hardware, while moving as a starter from 2B to RF to LF to 3B and finally to 1B.  He is the all time hits leader and was also the last Player-Manager.
Unfortunately, Rose's enshrinement in the Hall was derailed by his admitted gambling.  This has been a source of debate for the last 30+ years.
The rules are clearly posted in ever MLB clubhouse.  This wasn't an isolated incident and Rose knew what he was doing.
His case probably isn't helped by some of his actions.  Making cash while signing "apology" baseballs might not have mattered, but it didn't look good either.
I met Rose at the National last year.  After all these years, I'm still not sure how I feel about the HOF debate or Rose, for that matter.  Still, I recognize him as one of the biggest sports stars ever, probably one of the biggest names in pop culture, too.
I had the chance to meet a baseball hero from my youth and I was happy to talk to him briefly.  I don't need to put him on a pedestal to recognize and respect what he did on the field.
Rose accomplished a lot on the field.  Nobody can take that away from him.  Knowing his love of the game, I am sure it kills him not to be in the HOF.
Just like the steroid issue, I hate that gambling has affected Rose's place in baseball history.  Baseball stats and the HOF no longer mean what they did when I was younger.  These things were revered.  It's a shame.
As for Rose at the National, he was polite, but overly talkative.  It wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't a particularly memorable one either, aside from who Rose is.  I guess like I wrote about Rose, regardless of what happens, I am still there, next to one of the elite in baseball.

Barry Lyons and "Champions"

Barry Lyons made his major league debut with the New York Mets in 1984. He spent parts of 7 seasons with the Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Anaheim Angers and Chicago White Sox. Mostly used as a backup catcher, Lyons collected 150 hits for a ,239 career average. Always a fan of backup catchers, I was happy to see Lyons finish his career with the Sox.
After retiring, Lyons faced some serious challenges. His home was destroyed by a hurrican and he battled substance addiction. Fortunately for Lyons, he has triumphed thanks to his newfound devotion to God.
Lyons is one of fifteen athletes featured in Champions, a book written by my old friends George Castle and John Schenk. I had the honor of interviewing Lyons at the book launch party for Champions.
I also had the pleasure of having dinner with Lyons and Schenk the night prior to the party. I knew about Lyons being born again and I looked forward to a great discussion with him about religion, spirituality and even a little baseball.
Lyons talked openly about his troubles and being saved by his religion. He is strong in his beliefs and he is grateful for the chance to recover in life. Whether your religious beliefs, it is impressive and inspiring to hear Lyons speak so passionately about his. It was one of the most interesting conversations I have ever had, especially with a celebrity.
Regular readers know that I co-created the Backup Catcher Hall of Fame. As much as I like Lyons, I did not put him in the BCHOF. His averages are right there, but he just did not play long enough. Despite not being a BCHOFer, Lyons is definitely a HOFer in life. What a great guy.
Champions is filled with stories from 15 athletes who have similarly inspiring stories of overcoming life's obstacles.Check SignatureStrength.org for more information on Champions and other great work that Signature Strength does.

Cards That Never Were: Steve Spurrier 1975 & '77 Topps

Cards That Never Were is a recurring series in which I create virtual trading cards for players missed in various sets.  It is a concept I have borrowed from far too many to list, but I appreciate all of their efforts.
Before Steve Spurrier had a legendary college coaching career, he was a star quarterback at the University of Florida, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1966.  The San Francisco 49ers selected him with the third pick in the 1967 NFL Draft.
In the first four years of his NFL career, he was more of a punter than a quarterback.  In 1971, he didn't play much at either position.  In 1972 and '73, he basically split time with John Brodie, but was back on the bench for 1974.  In 1975, he started 6 games.  In 1976, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went 0-12 as the starter (as part of their 0-14 debut season).
For his career, Topps saw fit to give him cards in their 1972, '73, '74 and '76 sets.  I couldn't find pictures from his first four years in the NFL, so I settled for giving him 1975 and '77 cards.

Friendly Encounters: Glen Kozlowski and Scott Bridges

This is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

After an excellent career at Brigham Young University, Glen Kozlowski was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 11th round of the 1986 NFL draft. A serious knee injury in his senior year probably caused him to be drafted later than he should have been.
Koz recovered from the injury and played with the Bears from 1987-1992. In 66 games he had 31 receptions and played special teams.
I had never met Koz, but he was always on my "watch" list. That situation was corrected when he appeared at Bridges' Scoreboard in Griffith, IN. I combined a visit with my dad with Monday Night Football at Bridges with Koz.
Bridges has had many guest athletes over the years and all have been very good, but Koz was even better than the average guest. He really took time with everyone and made many special moments for the fans. We talked about his first NFL touchdown, among other topics.
Bridges is a great place to watch any game or just to hang out. There's always a friendly, lively crowd, tasty food and often some extra excitement, like bingo or other such activity.
Occasionally, you'll even see a guest celebrity, like this Saturday, September 22, when William "The Fridge" Perry is appearing! Check out BridgesScoreboard.com or the Bridges Scoreboard Facebook page to get info and updates. Better yet, stop by if you're in the area!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #391 Marty Brennaman & Bill Hemmer

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our alphabetical romp through Major League Baseball.

Born in Virginia, Marty Brennaman has been a broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds since 1974, originally teaming with former Reds pitcher Joe Nuxhall. Brennaman has called 6 no-hitters in his career (including one perfect game), Hank Aaaron's record-tying 714th home run and many other great moments. Anything other than a Reds jersey would be out of place for Brennaman's Celebrity Jersey Card.
Journalist Bill Hemmer has worked for CNN, Fox News and other outlets during his career. He worked as a disc jockey and in sports production before his caraeer really started to take off. He also backpacked around the world for a year. Hemmer threw a ceremonial pitch wearing #22, most notably worn by Dan Driessen, to earn his Celebrity Jersey Card.

The Blue World Order at Wizard World 2011

Stevie Richards, the Blue Meanie and Nova comprised the Blue World Order in the now-defunct ECW. It was originally intended to be a one off appearance, but it was so popular it stayed around a lot longer and was even revived briefly by the WWE years later.
The gimmick was a hilarious spin on the wildly popular nWo of that time period, but it wouldn't have worked without the talented trio.
All three men are also very nice and very smart about the business. Johngy's Beat Wrestling Correspondent JayHawk Evans handled the interview duties when we had the opportunity to talk t them at Wizard World years ago. Those interviews remain some of my favorites and some of the funniest stuff we've seen in our interviews. These guys are gold.
Though mostly retired from active wrestling, these three have been involved with consultations and appearances. All are big sports fans, with Stevie and Meanie being Philly fans, while Nova is a HUGE fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
I love the picture below. I was part of the bWo, even if just for a few minutes. I think Johngy would have fit in with the Blue World Order.

Chef Amanda Freitag at Printers Row Lit Fest

Chef Amanda Freitag is a regular judge on the Food Network's Chopped and a cohost on American Diner Revival. She also has appeared on several other shows on the network.
Freitag wrote The Chef Next Door: A Pro Chef's Recipes for Fun Fearless Cooking. She was promoting the book at Chicago's Printers Row Lit Fest when I had the chance to meet her and talk about her book.
Her passion for cooking was palpable. When describing the book, she said, "This book is my love letter to the home cook. I so admire the hard work it takes to prepare meals at home, and I hope this book lives on your kitchen counter as we prepare many meals together!"
We talked a bit about her work on Chopped. I mentioned that way long ago, I worked at Lerner Newspapers with Ted Allen, the host of Chopped. She mentioned that she loved working the show, because it gave aspiring chefs exposure and experience and she loved seeing their passion and creativity. She talked about how hard it was to eliminate some people who try so hard, but feels that everyone really walks away with a learning experience.
Freitag answered a lot of questions from the crowd and went well over her "allotted" time, which was really cool of her. She seemed more interested in helping others and spreading her love of cooking than actually selling her book. She even ran out of books, but still stayed to meet and talk to everyone.
I'd say she went above and beyond throughout the whole appearance. She had been on my "want to meet" list for a while and I was happy to finally get that chance.

Mick Foley, Windy City Slam and Wizard World 2018

I have a long history with wrestling legend Mick Foley. I've met him many times and interviewed him a few times. An ex-girlfriend of mine once talked to him extensively about Tietam Brown, his first novel. He's always great, no matter the occasion. At the recent Wizard World, thanks to Mike Pankow and Windy City Slam, I added a new experience to that list.
I've known Mike for several years and have crossed paths with him at various events we were both covering for different outlets. Mike recently started Windy City Slam, which promises to go "inside pro wrestling from the Chicago scene to around the world." When I saw Mike was covering Wizard World, I offered to help him with his wrestling interviews.
As always, Mike came to Wizard World well-prepared. He asked Mick about his legendary Chicago matches (wrestling with Maxx Payne against the Nasty Boys in 1994 and solo against Edge in 2006), the Concussion Legacy Foundation, his affinity for Christmas and Santa and much more. I even squeezed in a question about future books from Mick.
Despite knowing a lot about Mick, even I learned a bit in this 5 minute interview. It was a job well done by Mike and it was a sign of things to come for Windy City Slam. That interview can be found on Windy City Slam at Chicago History Sticks With Mick Foley.
I want to thank Mike for letting me tag with him. Check out WindyCitySlam.com for more interviews and stories. Also, follow Windy City Slam on Facebook.

Johngy's Beat Shirt: Mickie Knuckles

Mickie Knuckles has been wrestling since 2003. She has wrestled in many organizations in many countries, including Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. She as very popular and successful on the indy scene. She also proved herself to be as tough as they come.
She came into Resistance Pro and eventually won the Women's title. She always had great matches in RPro. She was a proud champ for RPro.
I had already been a fan of hers prir to her coming to RPro. I was excited to see her up close and to have an interview with her. She never disappointed.
Mickie left wrestling for a while to have a baby, but she came back in 2016. She continued wrestling on the indy scene. Earlier this year, she debuted at The Resistance as part of the "Death Becomes Her" event, which she won. I am hoping this leads to her comning to The Resistance for some matches.
During her time in RPro, Mickie was kind enough to model my shirt. It's a cool day when you get the stamp of approval from Mickie! She's a legend!

Kato Kaelin Loves Johngy's Beat

This was the second year I did some work with Kato Kaelin at Wizard World. Kato performed the duties of convention host and I occasionally was part of his act.
Last year, I was blown away by Kato's performance as host at Wizard World. He was charismatic, entertaining and upbeat the entire weekend.
Was that a one hit wonder? Would Kato come back and would he be just as good?
Kato did come back and he was even better. I saw him sing and conduct karaoke, do slight of hand magic, ask trivia off the top of his head and generally entertain young and old every day. I have never seen anything like it.
After joining him for a bit in the lobby area, I asked Kato for a Johngy's Beat promo. Again, he went above and beyond. He owed me nothing. He didn't have to do anything. Yet he did.
I applaud Wizard World for bring in Kato. I applaud Kato for being incredible. For more info on future shows, check WizardWorld.com. You never know when Kato might appear again.

Friendly Encounters: Haley Reinhart and Jim Gekas

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Many times, I am envious of my friends in their encounters with celebrities. This one would absolutely be near the top of that list, except I was there with Jim and I joined him in meeting Haley Reinhart. Actually, I was the reason he met her.
Haley is one of the few musical artists of recent years who I really like. A Chicago area native, she comes from a musical family. She appeared on the 10th season of American Idol, finishing in third place.
In addition to her beautiful voice, I really like her musical tastes. She often performs classic songs from the 1960's and '70's. Her album What's That Sound?, released last year, has 14 songs, mostly oldies, with a couple original compositions. I think I am close to wearing out the cd.
I am usually not a fan of concerts, but I had to make the exception when I learned Haley was appearing near me. Jimmy and I saw he in 2016 and then again in 2017 when she came back to the same venue.
Ever the logistics master, Jim scoped out the venue and secured the best seats for comfort and sight lines. We have enjoyed both shows from the same seats.
Prior to each show, I was able to wrangle meet-and-greet passes. Haley was as sweet as could be and actually remembered us the second time.
Haley concerts here are especially fun, because many friends and family members are in the audience. It is almost like a big family party (which would make me weird cousin Johngy?).
You can get all of the info and concert scheduling at HaleyReinhart.com. I also highly recommend you check out What's That Sound?

Celebrity Jersey Cards #390 Victoria Justice & Kenny Loggins

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our alphabetical romp through Major League Baseball.

Actress and singer Victoria Justice was born in Hollywood, FL Her acting debut came on tv's Gilmore Girls and she has been busy ever since. For her musical influences, she lists many, inluding Billy Joel and The Beatles. Justice stayed loyal to her home state Rays on her Celebrity Jersey Card and she gets extra points for an official cap.
Born in Washington, Kenny Loggins has enjoyed a Hall of Fame musical career. As part of Loggins and Messina or a solo act, Loggins has entertained fans for 50 years. Loggins turned down the offer to co-star with Barbra Streisand in A Star Is Born, but I think his career turned out pretty good anyway. For his Celebrity Jersey Card, Loggins is seen tossing from the mound, which makes sense since he had perfect pitch.

Velvet Sky Loves Johngy's Beat

Velvet Sky became a star in Total Nonstop Action wrestling. She won the Knockouts tag team championship once and the Women's Knockouts tile twice. She wass one of the most popular female wrestlers during her career. While retired from in-ring action, Velvet is active on the appearance scene.
I met Velvet a couple years back in Milwaukee, but this year at Wizard World, I had the pleasure of seeing her and talking to her every day. I hope she didn't get tired of me (LOL), but when I have the chance, I don't wastye it. You never know when she might appear next.
Velvet was the sweetest. We talked a bit about her great career and her potential WWE run. Although I was disappointed to hear she has no plans to join the WWE, I am happy she's enjoying life without actively wrestling.
After one chat, I asked Velvet to do a Johngy's Beat promo and she delivered a great promo. Thank you Velvet!

Applause to Kelly Kretschman of the USSSA Pride

Kelly Kretschman starred on the softball field at the University of Alabama. She left Alabama as the career leader in average, RBIs, home runs, triples, doubles, hits, walks, runs, stolen bases, slugging and on-base percentages. She still holds the record in several of those categories, as well as remaining in the Top Ten of several categories in SEC history.
She joined the National Pro Fastpitch Akron Racers in 2005 and has been lighting up the NPF ever since. She played with the Connecticut Brakettes in 2006 and the Washington Glory in 2006, before joining the USSSA Pride in 2009 and remaining with them through the present.
Kelly is a 3x NPF Player of the Year and a 5x NPF champ (all with the Pride). Entering the 2018 season, Kelly was 38 years old and coming off another great season, during which she had an unbelievable .500 batting average. This season was a bit of a disappointment statistically for Kelly, but the Pride took the title and Kelly was a huge part of the success of the team.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure to watch the elite athletes of the NPF. I have written about the legendary pitchers like Cat Osterman and Monica Abbott, but Kelly is among those greats. She is a Hall of Fame type player.
I have spoken to Kelly many times and she is a quality person, as well. I see her sign hundreds of autographs and take hundreds of pictures after every game. She always has time for everyone, even this old reporter.
Kelly probably will not win any individual awards this season, but I am sure she is satisfied with that sparkly Cowles Cup championship trophy and rightly so.
It has been my pleasure watching and knowing her over the last 5 seasons. I hope to see her in action again next season.
Thank you to the Chicago Bandits for their hospitality all season. Thanks to Kelly and the Pride for their time and consideration. Check out ChicagoBandits.com for more info and updates on the Bandits and the league.

Devon Brown and the Cleveland Comets 2018

Devon Brown was an outstanding pitcher for the University of Southern Alabama. She was selected by the Cleveland Comets with the 20th pick in the 2018 National Professional Fastpitch draft.
The Comets and Devon had a tough year. They finished in last place in the NPF iwth a record of 19-38. Devon went 3-18 with an ERA of 5.38.
Devon, the Comets and the fans deserved better than the 2018 season. Last year, the Comets were the Akron Racers, playing in an upgraded stadium with a loyal, long term fan base and a passionate owner. Strange things sometimes occur in the NPF and the Racers morphing into the Comets was certainly strange.
Former Racers owner Joey Arrieta has already been rumored to be trying to secure a new Racers team for Akron. She has a lot of support behind her, but who knows what will happen?
For the 2018 season, the NPF was really a 2 team league. The Bandits and the USSSA Pride were destined for the championship series right from the start. I honestly do not se that changing. The other teams will be jockeying for the other lower positions.
There never is shame in competing at the highest level, but I wonder how long players like Brown will stay in the league if they realize they really have no chance at a title. I don't know how to fix this problem of league instability and unbalanced talent.
I love this league and I respect the players immensely. I hope for long term viability and success of the league and, dare I dream, expansion.
For more info on the NPF, check out ProFastPitch.com. Of course, you can also find plenty of NPF coverage here on Johngy's Beat.

On the Beat With Mike Avella of Murray Bros. Caddyshack at Wizard World 2018

Today's interview came courtesy of Wizard World host Kato Kaelin. While I was jumping in and out of his bits with the attendees, he introduced me to Mike Avella, the GM at the newly opened Murray Bros. Caddyshack restaurant in Rosemont.
The first Caddyshack restaurant opened in 2001 in St. Augustine, FL. With a motto of "Eat, Drink and Be Murray," the restaurant pays homage to the legendary movie fo the same name, while also capturing the spirit of the famed Murray family.
Murray Bros. Caddyshack Rosemont is located adjacent to the Crowne Plaza on River Road, although the actual address is 9546 Balmoral. You can enter via Balmoral or through the Crowne Plaza.
The menu is filled with appetizers, salads, burgers and more, some with Caddyshack-related names, but all with great appeal. I heard the George Calamari and the crabcakes were excellent. I have not been there yet, but it is at the top of my list. I will be there very soon, especially since Mike so kindly promised me 2 beers!
Murray Bros. Caddyshack is part of the impressive growth of Rosemont. It is totally a destination place these days. It is a great alternative for conventions, too, instead of Chicago.
Right in the middle of the frenzied first day at Wizard World, Mike was kind enough to give a few minutes of his time to talk to me about Caddyshack.
After you check out the video, be sure to check out mbcshack.com for more info on Murray Bros Caddyshack.

Friendly Encounters: Tatum Edwards and Mark Pandocchi

Friendly Encounters is a weekly series featuring friends who have met celebrities.

Today, I am once again featuring a Chicago Bandits theme. Today, I have one of my favorite fans and one of my favorite former players.
Mark Pandocchi is one of the founding fathers of Bandit Nation. You can usually catch him in his seat behind home plate. He chats with fans and players in the on deck circle, too. Mark has even joined the Johngy's Beat crew and helped with some video work. He is also one of the organizers and hardest workers who put on the Tail Gate parties.
Tatum Edwards came to the Bandits with her twin Taylor from the Pennsylvania Rebellion. Previously, both starred at the University of Nebraska. Tatum was a fan favorite and often delighted us with her walking handstands before games.
Unfortunately, in the big turnover offseason prior to the 2017 season, Taylor was traded to the Scrapyard Dawgs and Tatum retired. Tatum had already started her coaching career. She recently left her position as pitching coach at Purdue to return as a coach with Nebraska.
Tatum and Mark are another two examples of the quality of people on the field and in the stands for the Bandits. It's a special environment and I am happy to be part of it.
Check ChicagoBandits.com for info on the team. Also, check here for recurring coverage of the Bandits!

Happy Birthday, Matt

Today I feature my nephew Matt, who is celebrating his 30th birthday. I am sure he is whooping it up somewhere, but I will wish him a great day here.
Matt and I have had a lot of fun over the years. He was a big help in launching and improving Johngy's Beat. We did a lot of interviews together, including him single-handedly facilitating my interview with Lauren Holly (for which I am eternally grateful).
I have watched Matt become a family man. It's always fun to see his updated pictures with Erin and Delaney and their pooch Annie. They make quite a cute family.
Matt is a great nephew, friend and person. Oh sure, he is still as petty as can be when we are making silly Coke bets, but it's all fun (even when I lose).
I love the picture below. Such happiness. I wish him a happy birthday and a lifetime of happiness. I love you, Big Money. Enjoy your day!

Celebrity Jersey Cards #389 Emmitt Smith & Lee Holdsworth

Celebrity Jersey Cards is a regular series in which I create virtual trading cards for celebs wearing sports jerseys. Today, we continue our alphabetical romp through Major League Baseball.

Florida native Emmitt Smith starred at the University of Florida, before becoming a Hall of Fame running back in the NFL. He played 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and 2 with the Arizona Cardinals, winning 3 Super Bowls and earning a Super Bowl MVP, along with a ton of other awards. He earned his Celebrity Jersey Card by returning to the Dallas area to throw a first pitch for the Rangers.
Australian race car driver Lee Holdsworth has been competing in racing since his teens. He  has won 3 races, while having 16 podium finishes. I assume he was in Texas for a race, when he earned his Celebrity Jersey Card. I just really liked the picture in picture on this one.

On the Beat With Genese Davis at Wizard World Chicago 2018

At Wizard World Chicago 2018, I had the pleasure of catching up with my author friend Genese Davis. I first met Genese at Wizard World a couple years ago.
I was intrigued by her book "The Holder's Dominion." It's main character is a young female who enters the world of gaming and finds herself in a thriller balanced between the magical world and the real world. There are a lot of elements at play, but they mesh smoothly to form a fantastic read.
I met Genese at her booth at Wizard World and heard she had a major scoop. We then did an interview prior to one of her many panels. I'll let Genese reveal the big news in the video below.
Genese is very talented, energetic, positive and so sweet. I love finding new authors and following them. Sometimes, we even become friends. I am happy to continue to follow Genese's career and I look forward to her big news becoming a reality!
Check GeneseDavis.com for more info. Also, check back here for recurring coverage of Wizard World and updates on Genese.
